Student Safety

Student safety is paramount for creating a secure and conducive learning environment. It ensures that students can focus on their education without the distraction of potential hazards or risks. Prioritizing safety fosters a culture of responsibility and awareness, helping to prevent accidents and injuries while promoting overall well-being and academic success.

The Student Shop Safety Program is designed to assist Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) students understand their roles and responsibilities when working in or managing a Student Organization Shop or maker space that has been approved by both Student Leadership, Involvement and Civic Engagement (SLICE) and EHS. This program establishes the minimum requirements needed to create a safe space in order to prevent student incidents and injuries. 
All student originations should have access to the appropriate level of personal protective equipment (PPE). If an organization cannot afford the cost of PPE they can request PPE through the EHS department.

Construction and demolition of structures, including Spring Carnival booths, must proceed in a safe manner, both for those involved in those activities and for others nearby. All applicable sections of Carnegie Mellon’s Structural Building Guidelines are to be followed.
